Homework 11 Sept 2011
Rugby is a way of life; a life-style; a family. You can travel the world on your own but if you let it be known, wherever you are, that you are a rugby player, you have an instant group of friends and a second family. But if you can't "talk rugby", they'll think you're bluffing. So, let's expand our rugby vocabulary. Let's start with the legends: the heroes that every rugby man and woman all over the world recognises.
- "That try" - the one that (British!) rugby players consider to be the best of all time. The first try of the Barbarians v New Zealand in 1971. Click here to see it.

Question 1: name all 7 players involved in the move that lead to "that try"? Many believe the scorer of this try to be the best player of all time. Make sure you get his name!
For a bonus point, who are the barbarians?
If you really want
to impress me: why was this "showcase" friendly between the BaaBaas and NZ a "needle match" for the NZ players in particular? (This is not an easy question so don't waste too long searching for the answer).
To show you how wonderful our club is, 2 of the 7 have come to Wallingford RFC in recent years to talk about their life in rugby. I was there!

- Rugby 7s - the fast and furious shortened version of rugby: Waisali Serevi is considered to be the best 7s player of all time. Click here to see why.
Question 2: what country did Serevi play for and where, on the globe, is it located?
- Jonah Lomu is considered to be the most difficult person to tackle in the history of the game. Click here to see
some of his less well known but still astonishing tries.
Question 3: what ended Lomu's rugby career prematurely and for another bonus point, where was he born?
- Question 4: what year was the first men's rugby world cup? Who came 1st, 2nd and 3rd? Who captained the winning team?
- Question 5: what year was the first women's rugby world cup? Who came 1st & 2nd and who won the plate?
- Not so much a question but..... start researching to find your favourite rugby clip on youtube. At some stage in the season you will be asked to introduce the clip to the rest of the squad and say why you like it so much.
Bring the answers to training or email me.
There's a whole world of rugby out there! Have fun finding it!
